Cronulla is the only Sydney beach suburb you can reach by train, and it sits on a peninsula with water on nearly every side: the open ocean and Bate Bay beaches to the east, Gunnamatta Bay and Port Hacking to the west and south. That position is the whole reason it is a beautiful place to live, and it is also the single biggest factor in how a home here should be painted.
On the coast, the enemy is salt. Onshore wind carries fine salt spray well back from the sand, and combined with strong UV it strips, chalks and lifts exterior paint far faster than it would on an inland Shire home in Engadine or Miranda. A finish that lasts ten years a few kilometres inland can fail in two or three on an exposed Cronulla frontage if it was never specified for the conditions. Most painters quote the same system everywhere. We don’t.
For Cronulla exteriors we wash down and neutralise salt build-up before anything else, prepare and prime bare or chalked surfaces properly, and apply Dulux Weathershield systems matched to the exposure of your particular wall. North and east-facing frontages near the water get treated differently to a sheltered rear elevation. It is not glamorous work, but it is the difference between a repaint that holds and one you are doing again before the warranty is up.
For the apartment blocks, the constraint is coordination. Cronulla has one of the densest concentrations of unit blocks in the Shire, a great many of them along The Esplanade, Gerrale Street and the streets running back from North Cronulla and Wanda. Painting a unit, a common stairwell or a full building facade here usually means working alongside a strata manager or body corporate, managing access through shared entrances, and keeping disruption to residents low.
