Tamarama is a small suburb with an outsized challenge for painters, and the reason is the ocean. The beach sits about a kilometre south of Bondi and a few hundred metres north of Bronte, the Bondi-to-Bronte coastal walk runs straight through the suburb past Tamarama Park and Marks Park, and most of the housing has direct east-facing exposure to the Pacific. Salt spray (not just salt-laden air), strong onshore winds, and severe UV combine to drive paint failure on west-facing walls, weatherboards, decks and timber detailing far faster than further inland. The wrong primer or a single-coat top will start showing within three to five years on a Pacific-facing wall. We specify marine-grade Dulux Weathershield systems with the right primer for the substrate (rendered cement-sheet, fibre-cement, original weatherboard, or contemporary cladding), and the finish is engineered to hold up.
For the interiors, the constraint is specification. A material share of Tamarama’s repaint work is designer-led or architect-led, particularly in the suburb’s growing number of contemporary coastal homes. That means working from a designer’s colour schedule, painting to specifier codes (Dulux, Resene, Porter’s Paints), matching specified finishes (matt, low-sheen, satin, half-gloss) without substitution, and respecting the level of finish the design brief calls for. We’re set up to work this way and routinely do.
For the apartment blocks, the constraint is coordination. Tamarama’s smaller stock of walk-up blocks usually means working alongside a strata manager or body corporate, managing access through shared entrances, and keeping disruption to residents low. We handle that scheduling and communication as part of the job.
One more local factor: Waverley Council. Tamarama falls under Waverley Council, not Woollahra (which covers Double Bay and the harbour suburbs). Some streets are inside Waverley Heritage Conservation Areas, with their own controls on exterior colour palettes and finishes for visible elements. We work to those controls so the finish lasts and the property stays compliant.
