Five Dock is not a typical Inner West suburb to paint, and the reason is its housing mix. This is family-home country. The streets off Great North Road are lined with solid double-fronted full-brick homes, California bungalows and Federation cottages, most of them on real blocks, owner-occupied, and painted to be lived in for the long haul. Alongside them, Five Dock has seen one of the heaviest knockdown-rebuild and duplex booms anywhere in the City of Canada Bay over the past fifteen years. The two need very different things from a painter.
For the established brick homes, the work is in the prep. Solid masonry, older render and face brick do not behave like modern plasterboard. They need the right preparation and a breathable, correctly matched Dulux system, or the finish bubbles and lifts within a couple of seasons. Many of these homes also carry pre-1970s paint on their timber trims, eaves and windows, which we handle and prepare safely. Get the substrate right and a Five Dock brick home holds its finish for years. Get it wrong and you are repainting far too soon.
For the new builds and duplexes, the work is in the finish. A builder’s handover coat is rarely a proper paint job. Fresh render, plasterboard and cladding are often given a single rushed coat, and the cracks, patchy sheen and thin coverage show up within months. We come in with the full system the home should have had from the start, so a new Five Dock house or duplex actually looks finished rather than freshly built.
